IV (Intra-Venous) Therapy

Let’s face it, most of us are afraid of getting shots. However, some shots can save lives. On Essex Rescue, we have the ability to start intravenous (IV) lines to replenish fluid, reverse a reaction to low blood sugar and stop the effects of narcotics. Placing a catheter into a patient’s vein (the blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart) allows these medications to be given directly into the blood stream. The result is quick treatment for some potentially life threatening medical conditions.

Narcan - Administered to counteract the effects of narcotics
Lactated Ringers - A suspension that contains the same amount of electrolytes as human blood
D50 - Used to raise the level of dextrose in the bloodstream.

We can also administer epinephrine (adrenaline) to treat allergic reactions. An allergic reaction is a strong response by the body to a foreign substance that commonly results in difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling. Some of the most common allergies are to peanut butter, bee stings, nuts, and some medications. The epinephrine (EpiPen) shot is available in pediatric and adult doses. The EpiPen is the same auto injector that some people carry in their purse or car.
