Membership Requirements
Each volunteer member is assigned to a 12 hour weekly shift. Each day of the week is broken into a day crew and a night crew. Day crews are on between 5:45AM to 5:45PM while night crews are on between 5:45PM to 5:45AM. While on duty and not on calls, members review a training topic for an hour to keep skills and knowledge fresh. The remainder of a duty shift is spent as the member wishes. Some do homework, catch up on work, watch TV, play basketball, and even relax. Click here to download an application.
There are several different levels of membership, each having its own commitment. Our main membership type, referred to as a Full Member, requires the member to be assigned to a weekly 12 hour shift and to contribute to the weekend/holiday schedule. Full members have voting rights and are eligible to become an officer. All Full members go through a minimum of a 6 month Probationary period where they work to complete a new member checklist and become an EMT (if not already certified). Most of our members are Full/Probationary members. There are also several duty variances available to Full members. One 12 hour shift and weekend duty, two 12 hour shifts and NO weekend duty, one 12 hour weekend shift and no other weekends, or two 6 hour shifts per week and weekend duty.
The other main type of membership is Associate, this category is further broken down into Alternate, Auxiliary (Driver), and Auxiliary (Crew). An Alternate member is a person that has been with Rescue for a minimum of 3 years. As Alternates, they are assigned to a weekly crew, but are only required to run 3 shifts a month and do not participate in the weekend schedule. They also carry voting privileges and can be an officer.
An Auxiliary (Crew) member is able to participate as a member of the crew, but not as a crew captain. The duty requirement is 24 hours per month with no required participation in the weekend/holiday schedule. There are no voting or officer privileges and the member must achieve at least an ECA certification within one year of joining.
An Auxiliary (Driver) member participates only as a driver for the crew. The requirement is 12 hours of duty each month with no participation in the weekend/holiday schedule and there are no voting or officer privileges. In order to qualify for this membership, you must be currently affiliated with another emergency service within the Essex Rescue service area or be a former member of Essex Rescue.
Approval for Associate status is based on the needs of the organization and determined by the officers
Standard shifts run from 5:45 am to 5:45 pm for 'Day' shift and 5:45 pm to 5:45 am for a 'Night' shift. Shifts recur on a weekly basis. For example, one may be assigned to the Monday “day” crew, meaning that the member will run every Monday from 5:45 am to 5:45 p.m. However, this would not necessarily apply to Associate members. Every 3 months a new weekend/holiday schedule is assembled based on input from each member.
The meetings that all members are required to attend include the bimonthly business meetings and the monthly training meetings. The business meetings are held on the second Tuesday of February, April, August, October and December at 7:00 PM. The annual meeting is held on the third Tuesday of June at 6:30 PM. Training meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM and provide an opportunity for the squad to train together on a large variety of skills and techniques.
