An emergency crew on the ambulance comprises 3-5 people. One person on each call is designated the Crew Captain and is responsible for the smooth management of the call, communication with the hospital, and direction of patient care. Before being allowed to act as a Crew Captain, individuals are trained in this function, have call experience, and have a demonstrated ability to perform under pressure. The other personnel on the ambulance include the driver and a “third”, “fourth”, or “fifth” crewmembers. These crewmembers are responsible for a large variety of tasks which may include obtaining vital signs, applying splints or bandages, assisting with patient transportation in and out of the ambulance, or preparing required documentation of the patient condition and treatment performed.
